Som 14 årig blev han junior Verdensmester i Go-Cart. I 1994 – 21 år gammel – tog han 14 sejre på en sæson i Formel 3 – det har ingen præsteret hverken før eller siden. Hans Formel 1 karriere havde en del turbulens, som testkører for McLaren, afløser for Mika Hakkinen og fast sæde hos Stewart-Ford-Teamet. Efterfølgende har han kørt flere 24 timers løb.
